Last year, Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler showed up to media day with dreadlocks. This year, Butler showed off a different look.
Butler arrived to media day on Monday at Kaseya Center with his “emo” look that included straightened hair, and pierced lips, nose and eyebrow. Butler’s fingernails were also painted black.
“I’m feeling this,” Butler said. “I’m very emotional right now. This is my emo state and I like this. This is me. This is how I’ve been feeling as of late.”
The dreadlocks were short-lived last year, as Butler opened the season without them. The photos of Butler with dreadlocks lived on during broadcasts and other promotional material throughout the season.
When Butler was asked if he’ll open this season with this emo look, he left the possibility open.
“I mean, I never know how I’m going to wake up in the morning, man,” Butler said. “So this is how I feel today and we’ll see tomorrow. Tomorrow I might be in all yellow, who knows. You’re lucky we didn’t get to wear our black jerseys because I’m supposed to be in all black.”
When shown a photo of Butler’s media day appearance, his Heat co-star Bam Adebayo couldn’t believe it.
“Ain’t no way that’s him. Ya’ll are [expletive] lying,” Adebayo said with a laugh. “What is wrong with this man? No, man. That’s not real. Oh my god, bro. I knew I should have worn a blonde fro. I’m going to start having fun in training camp.”
The Heat opens training camp at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton on Tuesday. It’s still up in the air whether Butler will show up to camp with his “emo” look.
“I’m one with my emotional state,” Butler said. “So this is what you get.”
