Jimmy Eat World have released their first new song since the Before Times. “Something Loud” is available everywhere digitally and accompanied by a video co-directed by the band and Austin Gavin.

"Something Loud" was co-produced by members of the band and Justin Meldel-Johnson, a producer best known for his work with Beck, Paramore, Nine Inch Nails, M83, Air and St. Vincent.

A guitar-driven rocker that's guaranteed to speak to fans who cut their teeth on "Bleed American," complete with an instantly contagious chorus built for massive singalongs, it finds Jim Adkins asking, “Do you still feel part of something loud?”

What inspired Jimmy Eat World's new song 'Something Loud'

It's a question he found himself asking as he witnessed the excitement over the announcement of October’s When We Were Young Festival, which triggered a period of deep reflection.

In a press release, Adkin explains, “While I thought I made the most of the early band days, I realize now I missed some stuff. You’re in such a hurry to grow out of the formidable years."

At that age, Adkins says, a lot of people just assume they'll magically get their act together when they hit whatever age they think of as how old a grownup is.

"It doesn’t work that way," he says. "But maybe the thing age and experience do reveal is that pivotal moments are hard to grasp when you are in them."

Following the path blazed by 'The Middle'

The song is self-released, a situation their press release refers to as familiar "to the lead up to the critically acclaimed 'Bleed American'; sans-label and creatively invigorated with no one to answer to but themselves."

"Bleed American" was the Arizona rockers' mainstream breakthrough and remains their most successful album, largely driven by "The Middle," a Top 5 smash on Billboard's Hot 100.

Despite a title change after Sept. 11, 2001, for fear that "Bleed American" could be misinterpreted as "Bleed, American," the temporarily self-titled album was certified platinum in 2002.

Four singles from the album went Top 20 on Billboard's alternative chart.

It also finished ninth on a list of 40 Greatest Emo Albums of All Time at Rolling Stone, which hailed it as "the album that propelled them from playing with underground bands like Mineral and Christie Front Drive to full-blown mainstream success."

'Something Loud' video

The video for “Something Loud” was shot in black and white in their Arizona studio, showing a close-knit performance reminiscent of 2021’s Phoenix Sessions concert series.

When they started on the video, they were working on ideas with their friend Mike Gill, who co-directed “555.” The closing scene is a nod to Gill, who died before they had a chance to bring those ideas to life.
