A release date for the Jimmy Savile drama The Reckoning has been announced.

The series, which will see Steve Coogan portray the disgraced television presenter, will come to BBC One and iPlayer at 9pm on October 9.

Viewers won't have long to wait for a second episode, which will air at the same time the following night. The full series will also be available as a box set on BBC iPlayer from 9 October.

Written by Four Lives' Neil McKay, the cast also includes Happy Valley star Siobhan Finnernan, Gentleman Jack's Gemma Jones, Andor actor Robert Emms, Gangs of London star Mark Lewis Jones, and Euphoria's Mark Stanley.

The Reckoning "will trace the life of Jimmy Savile, a man who, for decades, became one of the UK's most influential celebrities, but in death has become one of the most reviled figures of modern history following revelations of extensive and horrific abuse," according to its synopsis.

Before it has even hit our screens, The Reckoning has caused backlash with many questioning whether the crimes of Savile should be retold as a drama series.

Coogan, however, has defended the programme and told prospective viewers to "see it before you judge it."

He told BBC Breakfast: "There's this strong, strange feeling towards it; one of wanting to put it behind us, not wanting to talk about it and, as a rule, I think it's better to talk about it," he told BBC Breakfast last year.

"By not talking about it, you don't get to the nub of that and if you don't look at it you're destined for those things to happen again. The drama answers the question: how did he get away with it? The drama answers that question which is a very important one."

The Reckoning comes to BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 9pm on October 9.
