J.K. Rowling, author of the beloved Harry Potter novels recently shared two rejection letters over Twitter to encourage aspiring writers.

Rowling posted the letters for “inspiration not revenge” and made certain to blur out the signatures to support this.

Writing under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, Rowling was trying to find a publisher for The Cuckoo’s Calling, the first novel in the Cormoran Strike series of detective novels.

Publishers Constable & Robinson told Rowling they wouldn’t be able to publish the novel “with commercial success” and suggested “a writers group/writing course may help”.

The second letter from publishers Creme de la Creme, stated the company were “unable to accept new submissions at the moment”.

Rowling, an active Twitter user, shared the letters in response to a fan’s request.

She told her seven million Twitter followers: “I pinned my 1st rejection letter to my kitchen wall because it gave me something in common with all my fave writers!”

The Cuckoo’s calling was eventually published in 2013 by Sphere Books. It initially sold around 1,500 copies, however sales rocketed by a staggering 156,866% on Amazon after Rowling was outed as the author.
