Jo Koy donates concrete road, facilities to a high school in the Philippines

Filipino American comedian Jo Koy visited the Philippine city of Bacolod last week for the inauguration of a road he donated.

Koy, who was born Joseph Glenn Herbert, arrived in the Philippines on Dec. 28 , 2022, for a family vacation. On Friday, he traveled to the village of Alangilan to witness the launch of the completed road, according to reports.

Using funds from the Jo Koy Foundation, the comedian reportedly donated around 1.6 million Philippine pesos (approximately $29,200) to construct the quarter-mile concrete road for Alangilan National High School. His relatives, including his 19-year-old son, Joseph Herbert Jr., and his sister, Gemma Herbert Simmons, joined him during the special event.

According to a school official, 1.2 million pesos (around $21,900) was spent on the construction of the road. The public school used the remaining amount to improve its water service and build a guardhouse.

To help the school build more facilities, such as a basketball court and a cafeteria, Koy donated an additional 1.2 million pesos.

Since his arrival in the Philippines last month, Koy has been sharing several images on social media.

In one Instagram post, he described his trip as "the most beautiful family vacation we have ever taken."

Koy, who is known for his sold-out comedy shows, made history last year by starring in "Easter Sunday," a Filipino-themed film with an almost all-Filipino cast produced by a major Hollywood studio.

Produced by Steven Spielberg’s company Amblin Entertainment, the film highlights Koy’s Filipino background. It is inspired by the comedian’s own life experiences and has been described as a love letter to the Filipino American community.
