Comedian Jo Koy has responded to the criticisms he faced after hosting the 2024 Golden Globes on Sunday.

Koy’s response: In an interview with "Good Morning America" ("GMA"), Koy, whose real name is Joseph Glenn Herbert Sr., acknowledged the challenges of the gig and the limited preparation time he had. Despite “hurt” feelings over the critiques, he emphasized that hosting is a different style from stand-up comedy and that he was still proud of himself for taking on the task.

“Well, I had fun,” Koy shared. “You know, it was a moment that I’ll always remember. It’s a tough room. It was a hard job, I’m not going to lie… I’d be lying if [I said] it doesn’t hurt … Hosting is just a tough gig. Yes, I’m a standup comic but that hosting position it’s a different style. I kind of went in and did the writers’ thing. We had 10 days to write this monologue. It was a crash course. I feel bad, but I got to still say I loved what I did.”

The opening monologue: Koy’s opening monologue had drawn a divided response from the star-studded audience with failed attempts at humor, leading to negative reactions online. His jokes covered a variety of topics, including remarks about Barry Keoghan's on-screen nudity, a humorous comment about Ozempic and its effects, a quip about the length of the film “Oppenheimer” and a satirical remark about the film “Barbie” being “based on a plastic doll with big boobs.” However, the most awkward and controversial part of the monologue was when Koy made a joke about Taylor Swift, who did not appear to be amused. Instead, the singer took a sip of her drink.

“As you know, we came on after a football double-header,” he said. “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? On the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift, I swear.”

Koy’s explanation: On "GMA," the Filipino American comedian and actor explained that the Taylor Swift joke was not meant to target the pop star, but rather, the National Football League (NFL).

“I think the Taylor one was just a little flat and I just…it was a weird joke, I guess, but it was more on the NFL. I was trying to make fun of the NFL using cutaways and how the Globes shouldn’t have to do that. So it was more of a jab toward the NFL. It just didn’t come out that way,” he explained.

“I wanna be proud”: Despite the backlash and “falling short,” Koy gave himself credit for taking on the opportunity to host the 81st Annual Golden Globe Awards.

“That’s one thing I wanna be proud about,” Koy said. “It was a long journey, and the opportunity came. No one knew where the Golden Globes was gonna be, and then at the last second, CBS picked up the show and everyone was kinda turning down the offer because of the time, and I jumped on it.”
