The JoAnn Fabrics and Craft Store located in Marion will be closing its doors permanently effective Jan. 15, 2023, according to a company official.

The Marion store is located at the Marion Centre mall (formerly known as the Southland Mall) on Marion Waldo Road. Signs outside the front door of JoAnn Fabrics say all inventory is now discounted 20% to 40% during the "store closing" sale.

Shauntina Lilly, JoAnn's manager of public relations, diversity, and inclusion, confirmed on Tuesday that the Marion store is indeed closing its doors in the new year. In an email sent to the Star, Lilly said local customers can still access JoAnn products via the company's website.

"Despite this location closing, JoAnn will continue to unveil new stores with updated features and offerings in 2023," Lilly wrote in the email. "JoAnn physical store locations and our ecommerce business will continue to be available to customers, as we advance our mission to inspire creativity."

Lilly declined to disclose a reason why the Marion store is closing and didn't reveal how many people are employed at the Marion store. An employee at the Marion store declined to answer questions, instead referring all inquiries to the corporate office.

Published reports indicate that at least one JoAnn Fabrics and Craft Store located in Bridgeport, West Virginia, and another located in Keene, New Hampshire, are also scheduled to close in the new year. Those locations, too, began liquidation sales this week, according to the report.

JoAnn Fabric and Craft Stores, based in Hudson, Ohio, was founded in 1943, according to the company's website. Its 850 stores are located in 49 states.

According to the company website, the nearest store locations to Marion are 594 N. Lexington Springmill Road in Mansfield, 1265 Polaris Parkway in Columbus, and 2747 Festival Lane in Dublin.
