Joanna Gaines Reflects On Growing Up With A Korean Mom Amidst Recent Rise In Anti-Asian Attacks

In the light of the recent rise in racist attacks against the Asian community, Joanna Gaines opened up about the disparaging treatment she witnessed her mother, who is Korean, face growing up. In doing so, she used her platform to remind followers how important it is to embrace each other's differences.
The mom-of-five took to Instagram to share a photo of the Korean version of her latest children's title The World Needs Who You Were Made To Be. "To see the words of my book translated into my mother's first language is such an honor for me," Gaines wrote alongside the photo. The book, which was released in November, promotes individuality and celebrating who you are.
Gaines then proceeded to recall times during her childhood when she would be out with her mother and how within a moment "a person's harsh look or an underhanded comment would attempt to belittle her rich story and her beautiful culture."
She continued: "We can't take lightly the power that our words and actions carry," and much like the message her book employs: "The world needs who we were ALL made to be and all the amazing and beautiful differences we each bring with us," she wrote.
Gaines ends the post: "Maybe if we say it enough, it will ring true and become the message that softens even the hardest of hearts." In addition to the photo of The World Needs Who You Were Made To Be, Gaines also shared a photo from her childhood of her hugging her mother.
When the book was released last year, Gaines revealed that the experiences she faced growing up half Korean inspired her to write it. "Kids in kindergarten would make fun of me for being Asian," she recalled in a November Instagram post, which featured an adorable photo of herself as a child. "I want so badly to go back in time to that little girl—a little girl who happens to be half Korean and shy and a little bit self-conscious—to tell her that not only is she good enough, but she is extraordinary." Gaines then encouraged fans to do the same. "I hope you find the courage to embrace all that you are—all of your quirks, all of your beauty, all of your brilliance—because the world needs YOU," she wrote.
