Joker star Joaquin Phoenix's gay romance movie has a filming date.

The currently untitled film, which is directed by May December's Todd Haynes, is expected to start shooting this summer. Negotiations are set to begin with select buyers in the coming weeks, according to Deadline.

Plot details have been kept firmly under wraps, but the movie is believed to follow two men (one of whom is played by Phoenix), who are lovers and decide to leave California for Mexico in the 1930s.

Last year, Haynes confirmed that Phoenix will appear in the detective project, explaining that the Oscar winner also co-developed the film with him.

"The next film is a feature that's an original script that I developed with Joaquin Phoenix based on some thoughts and ideas he brought to me," he told IndieWire. "We basically wrote with him as a story writer.

"Me and Jon Raymond and Joaquin share the story credit. And we hope to be shooting it beginning early next year. It's a gay love story set in 1930s LA."

The director added: "Joaquin was pushing me further and going, 'No, let's go further'. This will be an NC-17 film."

Additional casting for the film is underway. Haynes' regular producer Christine Vachon, who is nominated for an Oscar this year for her work on Past Lives, will be producing.

Phoenix recently starred in Ridley Scott's epic Napoleon, as the titular French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.

The film also stars The Crown's Vanessa Kirby as Bonaparte's first wife, Empress Joséphine — after Jodie Comer dropped out of the project due to a scheduling conflict.

Phoenix will also be reprising his role as Arthur Fleck in Joker: Folie à Deux later this year. The sequel to 2019's Joker will also see Lady Gaga join as Harley Quinn/Dr Harleen Quinzel.

Joker: Folie à Deux is scheduled for a cinema release date of October 4, 2024. Joker is available to buy on Blu-ray or streaming now. Napoleon is available to buy or rent from Prime Video, iTunes, Microsoft Store in the UK. It will stream later this year on Apple TV+.
