Job seekers meet employers at Times Leader Job Fair

Sep. 22—WILKES-BARRE TWP. — Susan Menichiello, Human Resources Manager at Mount Airy Casino, Resort and Spa, threw her cards on the table at Wednesday's Times Leader Career Fair at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

Menichiello also had several pairs of dice and the table was covered with a blackjack felt, giving visitors that casino-friendly look.

Asked what types of jobs Mount Airy was hoping to fill, Menichiello said, "Everything! We're looking for cooks, security personnel, slot machine attendants and technicians, housekeepers, IT technicians and surveillance people."

Menichiello said job fairs like the Times Leader Job Fair are ideal events to identify prospective employees and to acquaint them with the Mount Airy facility.

Faith Morningstar, who drives a bus for a living, said she loves her current job, but stopped by the job fair to see what else is out there.

"I like to walk around and see what jobs are being offered at the companies," she said. "It's good to know what might be out there."

Susan Ent, a bus driver and trainer for Student transportation of America in Wilkes-Barre, said her company is looking for bus drivers and van drivers. She said bus drivers earn $80 per day and van drivers get $70 per day.

"We're always looking to hire drivers," she said.

Times Leader Media Group Publisher Kerry Miscavage said hosting events that benefit the community is on the list of high priorities at the Times Leader.

"We are an integral part of this region and workforce development is top of mind for everyone," Miscavage said. "We strive to make it easy for both recruiters and job seekers to connect effortlessly at this event today."

Keyne Rice, office manager at AmeriCold Logistics in Gouldsboro, a cold food storage company, said the company is looking for forklift operators and order selectors, starting at $21.11 per hour and increasing to $23.18 after one year.

"We are looking to hire 20 or more to our staff, which is just over 200," Rice said. "Job fairs like this are a great place to find and screen prospective employees."

Aubrey French, recruiter for United Methodist Homes, said the company was at the job fair to look for candidates to fill several positions — RNs, LPNs, CNAs, persona care aides, dietary cooks and housekeeping.

"This job fair is a good place to find candidates and we also get our name out there," French said.

David Palovchak, office administrator at BCM Security Services in Wilkes-Barre, said the company needs to fill commercial security positions and event positions.

"These career fairs are great for recruiting," he said. "This is our third job fair and this has been our most successful so far. We have a lot of potential applicants to review."

Miscavage said the Times Leader has always taken the lead for hosting job fairs for Northeastern Pennsylvania.
