On-The-Job Spotlight: Three get training at area businesses

Trevor Austin is a senior at Bronson Jr/Sr High School and attends the Construction Trades program at Branch Area Careers Center. He is the son of Melissa Sue Miller and Bryant Miller.

Austin has an On-the-Job Training placement as a general laborer at Nick G Michael Construction LLC, under the direction of Nick Michael and Kenny White. His responsibilities include framing, roofing, demolition, clean-up and prepping all equipment.

He said his OJT training has taught him so much. He has learned how to operate and use different tools and equipment all while learning the skills to build a house. His favorite part about his OJT job is the crew he works with and the variety of projects they work on each day. At Bronson Jr/Sr High School, he is a member of the varsity football team.

His hobbies include hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and trail-riding. He plans to continue working construction and restart his dad’s tree service business.

Gabby Khairi is a senior at Coldwater High School. She is a student in the Career Readiness and Exploration Program at the Branch Area Careers Center.

During the summer, she worked at Tilted Tulip Florist in Coldwater. She learned she enjoyed arranging floral arrangements unique to the occasion. She also learned patience which she has carried with her to her placement with the Head Start program. Gabby began working at with preschoolers at Lincoln School in Coldwater in the fall of 2021 as an OJT student through the Education Fundamentals Program.

She said her OJT experience has increased her confidence and focus on which direction she would like to travel in her future career. She has learned to be an advocate for children, as well as effective strategies for managing behavior in young children. She has found communication, time management and organizational skills to be imperative in the field of early education. She also has learned to valuable lesson of money management in these early stages of gainful employment.

Her favorite part of working with young children is the diversity of the student population. She most enjoys working with students in small groups to best monitor progress and growth.

She is working toward gaining her driver’s license and Child Development Association certification and intends to attend KCC to work toward a teaching certificate.

Kegan Haney is a senior at Coldwater High School. He is a student in the Career Readiness and Exploration Program at the Branch Area Careers Center.

During the summer of 2021, he participated in work experience through Benton Employment Services. Through this experience, he learned about soft employment skills and job opportunities at Envirolite LLC. In fall 2021, he decided to participate in on the job training at Envirolite through the Career Readiness Program at BACC.

He said his OJT experience has helped him learn about adult life and employment. He has learned to apply the soft employment skills he learned this summer as well as the hard employment skills necessary to be successful in the workplace. Skills he has found to be extremely important are time management skills, communication skills, and money management skills.

His favorite part of his OJT experience is being able to spend part of his day at Coldwater High School and the other part at work. He is excited to have a plan in place as he graduates.

He plans is work at Envirolite full time after graduation and to save for a truck.

He lives with his mother, Teresa Scott, and has three sisters.
