Joe Montana is no stranger to the sports spotlight, but he believes a solid performance on the field is only possible with proper nutrition. During his time in the NFL (and his run in four different Super Bowls), Joe says he wasn't great about keeping his body well-fed, which is something he advises any aspiring athlete to do.

While playing football for his career, Joe wasn't big on breakfast. That is, besides the plate teammate Roger Craig would sometimes bring over from his friend's soul food kitchen that included grits, home fries, eggs, pork chops, bacon, and more. Typically, though, Joe probably wasn't eating a big breakfast before his games and would settle on something simple like a sandwich for lunch.

His wife, Jennifer, is the cook of the family, and while she makes sure Joe gets his greens and veggies in, she also makes a killer homemade pizza. Meanwhile, Joe is usually the one "burning things on the grill." His favorite food to indulge in is a good cheeseburger, and he remembers fondly how after football games a security guard would bring him a double cheeseburger from the owner's box in the stadium.

A pregame ritual that he doesn't suggest to young athletes is his old go-to meal before stepping on the turf—a small steak filet and one or two Snickers bars. Ahead of one of his Super Bowl appearances, he stuck to this habit and remembers nearly blacking out through the rush of the game. His best advice? Portion-control and a well-rounded diet are everything.
