Former EastEnders star Joe Swash is headed back to Albert Square in an unexpected way.

According to The Sun, Joe has been lined up to present a behind-the-scenes EastEnders special where he will revisit the show's set and interview current cast members. The special has been described as being completely different in format to the usual retrospective documentaries that EastEnders has done in the past.

Airing later this year on BBC3, this currently-untitled project will feature Joe sitting down with original cast members Gillian Taylforth (aka Kathy Cotton) and Letitia Dean (aka Sharon Watts), among others, to discuss memorable moments.

There is a lot to talk about in Walford these days, as the show prepares for a huge Christmas season where the victim of a flashforward death is revealed.

The BBC declined to comment on the project when approached by Digital Spy.

Joe was a mainstay on the BBC One soap between 2003 and 2008 as cheeky chappy Mickey Miller, who is probably best remembered for his fling with Stacey Slater and his feud with Sean Slater.

He recently described his departure from the show — where Mickey left Walford to become a concierge in Norwich — as one of the worst exits in EastEnders history.

"I had the worst outro ever! I didn't even leave at the end of the episode," he told campmates on the I'm a Celebrity South Africa show.

"So usually you leave at the end of the episode and you get the 'doof doof'. Mine, I went to Norwich to be a bellboy at a hotel, and mid-scene I just walked into the Vic and went: 'Right, see you later'.

"They turned back to Phil, turned back to me and I'd gone. I was like: 'What, that's it?' I was there five years and not one 'doof doof'!"

Luckily, Joe has had plenty of success since leaving the Square, including two stints on I'm a Celebrity and winning Dancing on Ice. These days, he also spends lots of time with wife Stacey Solomon and their blended family.

EastEnders airs on Mondays - Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
