Joe Walters, Steve LaCrosse part of new class to enter Rochester Lacrosse Hall of Fame

The USA Lacrosse Greater Rochester Chapter will hold its 2022 Hall of Fame Awards Dinner on Saturday and induct five new individuals and one new team to its Hall of Fame.

Steve Cochi, Steve LaCrosse, James Loman, Joe Walters and Katie Ziegert join the 1992 Nazareth College men’s team as the Class of 2022 for the event at the Harro East Ballroom.

Steve Cochi

Cochi helped lead Webster High to the Section V upstate title in 1969, scoring six goals in the 7-6 overtime win over Fayetteville-Manlius. He went on to be an All-American at MIT and graduated as the school’s all-time scoring leader before his career as a pediatrician.

Steve LaCrosse

The 1982 Canandaigua Academy graduate was best known as a Section V lacrosse official for years as well as an active booster of sports at Canandaigua, Penn State and Colgate. He owned and operated E.F. LaCrosse Sales before dying unexpectedly on Aug. 4, 2021, in a motorcycle accident while en route to Lake Placid to officiate games at the annual summer tournament.

James Loman

The Geneva High and Hobart College graduate was a PE teacher at Geneva from 1923-1949 where he coached football, basketball and lacrosse. His lacrosse teams had a 75-24-5 record and won nine scholastic titles and had six undefeated seasons. He also coached Geneva High to the 1934 Section V basketball championship and won 15 Finger Lakes League titles. The football field at Geneva High is named in his honor.

Joe Walters

The Irondequoit graduate was an All-American in high school, where he led Irondequoit to the 2001 Section V title before heading to Maryland, where he was a four-time All-American, the 2003 ACC Rookie of the Year and the ACC Player of the Year in 2004 and 2006.

He was the No. 1 overall draft pick for Major League Lacrosse in 2006 and played 16 seasons in the professional field league. He also played professional indoor lacrosse, mostly with his hometown Rochester Knighthawks and helped them win National Lacrosse League championships in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Walters also won the coveted Mann Cup with the Brampton Excelsiors of Major Series Lacrosse in Canada in 2011, giving him a total of six national championships: three in the NLL, two in the MLL and one in MSL.

Katie Ziegert

The Canandaigua native graduated Mercy in 1998, where she was an honorable mention All-American in 1998. She went on to play defense at Penn State before becoming a lacrosse official in Ohio, where she works high school and college games at all three levels.

1992 Nazareth College men’s team

The Golden Flyers won the 1992 Division III national championship under coach Scott Nelson and finished the season with a 14-1 record.

Tickets

The evening begins with a 6 p.m. social hour followed by a 7 p.m. dinner and concluding with the inductions. Tickets for the evening at $75. Children under 10 are $15 and the registration form is available at the USA Lacrosse Greater Rochester website.
