Joel Dommett has confessed that he didn't immediately recognise a-ha frontman Morten Harket when he was unveiled during the most recent series of The Masked Singer.

The Take On Me vocalist competed on the show as the character Viking and was eliminated in the sixth episode, with the panel clueless as to his identity.

Dommett told the Mirror that both Harket and former home secretary Alan Johnson — who appeared in the first series — presented problems when their masks were revealed.

"If you go back and watch it, it is very clear I have no idea who it is," said the 36-year-old comedian about the Harket reveal.

He added: "The problem is that I don’t know everyone in the world when they are revealed.

“You can guarantee the less I know them, the more energy I put into the reveal. I was like: ‘Oh my God, it’s Morten Harket!’”

Dommett pointed out that eagle-eyed viewers can spot Mo Gilligan — one of the show's panel of guessers — saying "Joel has no idea who this guy is" after the reveal.

The comic said the experience was "the most awkward interview I have done in my entire life" and revealed he was similarly baffled when Labour politician Johnson was revealed as Pharaoh in the first series.

He added: "I don’t know politics and the first season we had an Egyptian man and it was Alan Johnson.

“I was like, in my head, ‘Who the f*** is Alan Johnson?’ Apparently, he was nearly Prime Minister.”

Dommett revealed he has been doing strange corporate events via Zoom, themed around The Masked Singer, and stressed that he's glad to be stepping away from them.

He added: "I spent nine months where a company has someone dancing in a costume. I say ‘take it off’ and it ends up being Mary from accounts and everybody loses their s***.”

The Masked Singer became one of the most popular shows of recent years when it aired at the beginning of 2021, drawing a peak audience of more than 10 million viewers for its grand final.
