Joffrey Ballet, Court Theatre in the latest COVID postponements for live shows

As Illinois reaches what might be peak omicron, Chicago theaters and performance companies have announced a new round of postponements and schedule changes due to COVID-19 and public health conditions. Below are some of the most recent announcements, joining a number from last week. Whatever your live entertainment plans, it’s worth checking for last-minute changes before heading out.

Joffrey Ballet is postponing Yuri Possokhov’s “Don Quixote.” The original performances slated to run Feb. 16-27 have been rescheduled to June 2-12 at the Lyric Opera House (20 N. Wacker Drive). The family-friendly ballet about the eccentric nobleman is set to a score by Ludwig Minkus. Current ticket holders have had their seats transferred to a corresponding performance date; ticket holders also have the option to transfer the value their ticket purchase to a subscription or future production, make a tax-deductible donation for the Joffrey Ballet Annual Fund, or receive a refund. Lookingglass Theatre Company announces that “Lucy and Charlie’s Honeymoon” will now have its world premiere in the fall at Water Tower Water Works (821 N. Michigan Ave.). The new musical features original country music and folk songs, composed and written by Matthew C. Yee in his playwriting debut. Next on stage for the company is a return of “Lookingglass Alice” May 12 to Aug. 21; lookingglasstheatre.org

Court Theatre’s production of “The Lady from the Sea” will now run from Feb. 25 to March 27 in Hyde Park (5535 S. Ellis Ave.). The play by Henrik Ibsen, translated by Richard Nelson and directed by Shana Cooper, is about the return of a sailor and a lighthouse keeper’s daughter; it had been on the verge of opening in March 2020 before the pandemic shutdown; www.courttheatre.org

The Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival, still set for Jan. 20-30 in Chicago at multiple venues, has announced a few date changes and cancellations including: “Dogugaeshi” by Basil Twist, set for Jan. 20-24 in the Upstairs Theater at Chicago Shakespeare Theater, has been postponed until 2023. “Dreaming” by Torry Bend will not be traveling to Chicago as planned for this year’s festival. But the Neo-Futurists have added two late-night performances of “I Object! 30 Neo-Futurist Puppet Plays” on Jan. 21 and 28; more at chicagopuppetfest.org

Babes With Blades Theatre Company announced that the world premiere of “Plaid as Hell,” written by Cat McKay and directed by Christina Casano, originally scheduled for Jan. 29 to March 5 at the Factory Theater (1623 W. Howard St.), will be postponed with new dates to be announced. The queer comedy involves a camping trip, friends and relationships and a serial killer on the loose; babeswithblades.org

Chicago Children’s Choir’s Black History Month concert “Remembering, Reclaiming, Reconnecting” has been rescheduled to Feb. 26 and will no longer be a live, in-person performance. The virtual concert will be livestreamed at 6 p.m.; www.ccchoir.org
