John Boyega has landed the lead role in a prequel series to The Book of Eli.

The new project is set 30 years before the events of the hit 2010 Denzel Washington movie, and comes from the film's original writer Gary Whitta.

According to Deadline, Star Wars' Boyega will play the younger version of Washington's character Eli, who in the original movie crosses a post-apocalyptic landscape protecting a book that holds the key to humanity's salvation.

The time period of the prequel series means that it will likely be set around the nuclear event that caused Earth's ecocide.

Alongside Whitta – who is on board as creator, writer and executive producer – original movie directors the Hughes brothers are set to executive produce, with Boyega also on board as an executive producer.

Following the conclusion of the Star Wars sequel trilogy in 2019, Boyega has been keeping busy, recently starring in The Woman King and They Cloned Tyrone, as well as winning a Golden Globe for his role in TV series Small Axe.

Last year, the actor revealed he was open to a return to the Star Wars franchise as Finn, telling TechRadar: "I'm open to all characters and scripts that are enjoyable, have a great cast attached, and a terrific director. So yeah, I'm open to all opportunities."

The actor also revealed which of his three movies in the trilogy is his favourite as he ranked them in preferential order.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens is most definitely the best," Boyega told First We Feast. "Second for me comes Star Wars 9, and then the worst, in the most respectful sense, is Episode VIII for me. But they’re all lovely."

The Book of Eli is yet to confirm a streamer or release date.
