John Brown University to add AI degree

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — John Brown University announced on February 19 that it will offer a new undergraduate degree in artificial intelligence, according to a news release.

The school initially allowed students to minor in artificial intelligence starting last year. It decided to make it a major after interest in AI continued to grow.

The current generative AI market is approximately $40 billion and is expected to grow to $1.3 trillion by 2032, according to the press release.

“AI has enormous potential to improve health care, make education accessible, improve economic health, increase online child safety and much more,” said Ted Song, Ph.D., JBU’s chief innovation officer.

Students who take part in the program will learn how to design, create and use AI. Students can also incorporate the degree with other academic interests such as business, data analytics, engineering, mathematics and natural sciences.

Dr. Justus Selwyn says JBU wanted to make sure to prepare students for a growing industry.

“These days recruiters, big players, computer science, IT, non-IT, all these recruiters are looking for students or grads who would have exposure to mission learning, artificial intelligence, robotics, recommendations systems. They are looking for a grad who can work on this stuff,” said Selwyn.

The program will be available to students in Fall 2024.
