John Cena to star in ‘Peacemaker’ series as ‘The Suicide Squad’ character

“The Suicide Squad” is coming to the small screen.

A prequel series for James Gunn’s upcoming DC Comics movie was announced Wednesday from the writer-director and actor John Cena, who will play the title character Peacemaker.

“I have said before that it has been a tremendous honor and an incredible opportunity to be part of The Suicide Squad and to work with James on what is going to be a fantastic movie," Cena said in a statement.

"I am unbelievably excited to have the chance to team up with him again for ‘Peacemaker.’ We can’t wait for fans to see this.”

Peacemaker, originally introduced in a 1966 comic, is a man who “believes in peace at any cost – no matter how many people he has to kill to get it,” according to HBO Max.

“'Peacemaker' is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag," Gunn said in a statement. “I’m excited to expand ‘The Suicide Squad’ and bring this character from the DC film universe to the full breadth of a series.”

Gunn will write all eight episodes and direct several, including the pilot. He’ll also serve as executive producer alongside “The Suicide Squad” producer Peter Safran.

Production is expected to begin in early 2021.

“Peacemaker” joins a laundry list of DC Comics TV shows booked at HBO Max, including a Batman spinoff from Matt Reeves, “Justice League Dark” from J.J. Abrams and Green Lantern and "Strange Adventures,” both from Greg Berlanti.
