John Deere dealership with locations in Maryland, Pennsylvania to change hands

Atlantic Tractor is in the process of acquiring Smith’s Implements, which has locations near Hagerstown, Md., and Mercersburg, Chambersburg and Carlisle, Pa.

The deal, announced Friday, will be finalized on or about June 6, according to a news release from Smith's.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

According to an email to The Herald-Mail from Smith's Implements, the business employs about 60 people. "They are all staying" with the new owner, the email states.

Smith's serves agricultural, governmental, commercial, residential and construction customers in the region. It carries products by John Deere, Stihl Honda and other companies.

Based in Clayton, Del., Atlantic Tractor has 15 locations in Delaware, Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Adding Smith's Implements' four locations puts Atlantic Tractor in a better position "to effectively support farm equipment sales and service," according to the news release from Smith's. "Atlantic Tractor will also be contracted to sell John Deere compact construction, commercial turf and lawn equipment."

Both Atlantic Tractor and Smith's have histories representing John Deere. The news release noted the relations have been passed on through generations of ownership.

"Smith's 59 year history and employees serve to strengthen Atlantic Tractor as we grow into the future," the release states.

"Ross Smith and Smith's Implements Inc. wishes to thank each employee and customer for their loyal support and friendship over the years. We are excited about the bright future with Atlantic Tractor."
