John Deere X380 and X390 Lawn Tractors Recalled Due to Crash Hazard

The wheel hubs can fail, causing a tractor to lose braking and propulsion

John Deere has issued a recall for about 160 John Deere X380 and X390 lawn tractors sold in the U.S. and about 30 of the same models sold in Canada. The wheel hubs were not manufactured to specifications and can fail, causing the tractor to lose braking and propulsion, posing crash and injury hazards.

John Deere, owned by Deere & Company in Moline, Ill., has received three reports of a lawn tractor not braking properly. One minor injury resulting in bruises and abrasions has been reported, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission recall notice.

The recall involves two green-and-yellow John Deere models, the X380 and X390. They were sold at John Deere dealers nationwide and at Deere.com from April 2022 through May 2022 for $5,000 to $6,300. Consumer Reports has not rated either of these models.

If you own an X380 or X390 tractor with one of the specified serial numbers listed below, immediately stop using it and contact an authorized John Deere dealer for a free repair. (John Deere is also contacting all known purchasers directly.) The model number is printed on the side of the tractor; the serial number is on the frame on the front right side of the machine near the engine.

The recalled serial number ranges:

  • Model X380, no deck: 1M0X380DXNM130065 through 1M0X380DXNM130068

  • Model X380, 48-inch deck: 1M0X380AXNM132496 through 1M0X380AXNM132575

  • Model X380, 54-inch deck: 1M0X380BXNM131269, 1M0X380BXNM131261; 1M0X380BXNM131277 through 1M0X380BXNM131302; 1M0X380BXNM131306 through 1M0X380BXNM131310, and 1M0X380BXNM131312

  • Model X390, 48-inch deck: 1M0X390AXNM131261 through 1M0X390AXNM131295 and 1M0X390AXNM131298 through 1M0X390AXNM131300

How many: About 160 models sold in the U.S. and 30 models sold in Canada.

The remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled lawn tractors and contact an authorized John Deere dealer for a free repair. John Deere is contacting all known purchasers directly.
