  • Dr. Mehmet Oz is being accused of recording a campaign video from his mansion in New Jersey.

  • The video shows what appears to be the same bookcase as the one in his New Jersey home.

  • Oz is the Republican nominee for US Senate in Pennsylvania and was endorsed by former President Trump.

Since announcing his run for the US Senate seat representing Pennsylvania, Dr. Mehmet Oz, the celebrity doctor turned Republican politician, has been dogged by criticism that he doesn't actually live in the state he wants to represent.

As The Philadelphia Inquirer reported, Oz, in December 2020, registered to vote using his in-laws' address in Bryn Athyn. And according to his campaign, that Montgomery County address is where he resides today.

But in January 2020, Oz and his wife granted People magazine access to a property far closer to New York City. The headline: "Inside the New Jersey Mansion Dr. Oz and His Wife Lisa Built from Scratch 20 Years Ago."

On Thursday, Oz's Democratic rival, Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, accused the Trump-backed candidate of posting a campaign video recorded on that same property.

"Pro tip: Don't film an ad for your Pennsylvania Senate campaign from your mansion in New Jersey," Fetterman said in a statement.

It's unclear where Oz taped the campaign video; his campaign did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

In the campaign video Oz posted on Twitter, he blasts the mayor of Philadelphia, Jim Kenney, over widely-panned comments he made after two police officers were struck with bullets on July 4. An exasperated Kenney, that night, told reporters he was tired of dealing with gun violence and would be "happy when I'm not here."

"A surgeon never ever gives up on his patients, especially when lives are on the line," Oz says in the video — in front of bookcases that appear similar to the ones featured in People magazine.

In particular, both the campaign video and the one shot by People appear to feature bookcases with the same rope-like pattern between the shelves, with both also featuring blue-and-white ceramic vases and golden candlestick holders.

Even if Oz were still living at his Cliffside Park address, just across the Hudson River from New York City, it would not affect his eligibility to run for federal office in Pennsylvania — so long as he does not vote in New Jersey. Under the US Constitution, a US senator need only reside "when elected" in the state they wish to represent.
