John Fuson wins re-election as Montgomery County Sheriff in landslide vote

Montgomery County Sheriff John Fuson won re-election in a landslide victory Thursday over Independent challenger Mike Oliver to earn another four years as sheriff.

Appointed in 2012, Fuson was first elected in 2014 and won reelection in 2018.

He received 9,225 votes (57.55%) to Oliver's 6,779 (42.29%), according to unofficial results from the Montgomery County Election Commission.

"I think it feels awesome," Fuson told The Leaf-Chronicle during his victory party Thursday night.

"I don't think there (were) many points during the campaign I had any doubt. I've always been connected and communicated with the community about what it is that we're doing."

Fuson said he's felt a strong wind of support during his tenure as sheriff.

He said with growth in Montgomery County and the pandemic have created plenty of challenges for his office.

"Those things can challenge anybody, but we've got a good team; we've got a good staff. Of course you're not going to make everyone happy, but at the end of the day, it's a tough job," Fuson said. "Nobody knows that more than the person that's sitting in that chair, because there's decisions that have to be made, and sometimes they're not easy."

Fuson said his goal to do what's best for the agency and for the community.

He first got into Montgomery County politics in 2010, when he was elected Montgomery County Commissioner for the 7th Civil District.

Since becoming sheriff, Fuson has served as Tennessee Sheriff's Association president for 2019-2020 and on several legislative committees.
