The good news is American Brandon Nakashima won. The bad news is American John Isner lost. The unfortunate news, they were playing each other.

With so many talented Americans in the world of men's tennis these days, it's inevitable that there will be some American-on-American crime at the BNP Paribas Open. That happened Wednesday when Nakashima earned a first-set tiebreak and went on to grab a 7-6 (7), 6-3 win over the veteran Isner on Stadium Court.

Next up for Nakashima will be a date on Friday with red-hot Daniil Medvedev, the No. 5 seed here.

Shelby Rogers vs. Katie Volynets: In another American clash, this one on the women's side, Shelby Rogers outlasted young American star Katie Volynets to move into the first round. Rogers, who has had success at this event, reached the quarterfinals in 2021, topping Volynets 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.

Rogers will now face 2022 finalist Maria Sakkari, the No. 7 seed, in her next round. While that sounds like a daunting task, Rogers is 3-0 in her career against Sakkari.

Gael Monfils vs. Jordan Thompson: Monfils, a crowd favorite at Indian Wells and a two-time quarterfinalist at the BNP Paribas Open, lost his first match, 6-3, 6-1, to Australian Jordan Thompson in the first of two evening matches on Stadium Court. Thompson, who is ranked 87th, has won just two previous matches at Indian Wells. One of those wins came last year over David Goffin of Belgium.

Monfils, who is ranked 210, won two matches at Indian Wells last year. One of those came against Daniil Medvedev, who was the top-ranked player in the world at the time. Monfils eventually lost to Carlos Azcaraz of Spain in the Round of 16.

Thompson will now move on to play Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece in the next round Friday.
