John Krasinski just sold Some Good News, because good things can’t last forever

John Krasinski’s YouTube series Some Good News has brought us so many bright spots during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic such as virtual proms and graduations and The Office/Hamilton cast reunions (to call out just a few). But it seems that all good things must come to an end, because last week, The Hollywood Reporter shared that the series was sold to ViacomCBS after Krasinski produced eight episodes, which are all currently available for free on YouTube. The actor opened up to his former Office costar Rainn Wilson about his decision to sell, and explained that he’ll still be involved in the show we’ve grown to love during our time in quarantine.

According to the THR report, Krasinski will still serve as an executive producer when Some Good News pivots to streaming on CBS, but he will not host upcoming episodes. A new host and a release date is set to be announced soon.

In a statement, per THR, Krasinski said that he “could not be more excited and proud to be partnering with CBS/Viacom to be able to bring Some Good News to so many more people! From the first episode, our goal was to create a news show dedicated entirely to good news. Never did I expect to be joining the ranks of such a historic news organization as CBS.”

Fans were understandably bummed that Some Good News wasn’t going to remain a grassroots, at-home project. But in an Instagram Live session with Rainn Wilson on Tuesday, May 26th, Krasinski opened up about the decision to sell the show, telling Wilson that he was “only planning on doing eight (episodes) during quarantine.”

Krasinski added, “I have these other things that I’m going to be having to do very soon, like Jack Ryan [his Amazon series]. More than that, writing, directing and producing–all those things–with a couple of my friends was so much.”

The Quiet Place actor also shared that continuing to host the series “wouldn’t be sustainable with my prior commitments.”

Still, Krasinski had nothing but positive things to say about his experience hosting and producing Some Good News, and it seems there are plenty of fun surprises in store for fans when it launches on CBS streaming. He called it “the most emotionally fulfilled I’ve ever felt in my entire life,” and shared that he would “love to keep doing the show from my office forever…I’ve received the most amazingly kind notes about how much that show meant to everyone, but the truth is, it meant no more to anyone than me.”

“We have a lot of really fun stuff planned and I can’t wait to dig in,” Krasinski told Wilson. “I’m going to be a part of it whenever I can, and I’m going to host a couple episodes and bring on a different community of people. We’re really, really excited about it.”

It seems like we’ll just have to stay tuned to see what he’s got up his sleeve, and we’ll definitely keep watching Some Good News on repeat while we wait.
