John McCain's beloved dog Burma dies in 'tragic accident,' Cindy McCain says

John McCain's dog, Burma, who was a constant companion to the late senator during his final months at the family home near Sedona, has died in a "tragic accident."

Burma, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, was a birthday present to McCain years ago and was "absolutely and truly devoted to him," his daughter Meghan McCain wrote Monday on Instagram.

She rarely left his side.

McCain, R-Ariz., and his family frequently shared photos of Burma romping around their Cornville property, swimming in the creek, or posing wide-eyed in a family photo from Meghan's 2017 wedding.

"To all who loved our dear Burma," Cindy McCain wrote in an Instagram post. "She died today in a tragic accident at our beloved Hidden Valley. She (is) now frolicking with the one she loved most in heaven now."

McCain died Aug. 25, 2018, after a battle with brain cancer. He was 81.

McCain posted videos on Twitter of her leaping into the creek to fetch a toy and she could be romping around in the background of a CBS 60 Minutes interview following his cancer diagnosis.

On Monday, Meghan posted a picture of the brown-haired pooch with hazel-colored eyes cuddled up on McCain lap.

"She would never leave his side, followed him around every single step when he would walk around our ranch, slept by his side every night...." she wrote. "...The love this dog gave him was equal to a family member. I love you Burma and hope you're in heaven jumping into creeks, chasing sticks and fish with Dad."
