John McVay, longtime 49ers GM and grandfather to Atlanta-born NFL coach Sean McVay, dead at 91

The San Francisco 49ers have announced the death of their former General Manager John McVay.

McVay is the grandfather of Sean McVay, the current head coach of the Los Angeles Rams, who is from Atlanta. John McVay’s son is Tim McVay, a former general manager at WSB-TV.

John McVay was 91.

He spent 22 seasons with the 49ers, working in various capacities. During his tenure, the 49ers claimed five Super Bowl titles. Prior to working with the 49ers, he was the head coach of the New York Giants and the head coach at the University of Dayton.

He was inducted into the 49ers Hall of Fame in 2013.

The team has released a statement, saying:

“This is a very sad day for our organization and the entire football community. John McVay was a driving force in constructing teams for our five Super Bowl titles. Most importantly, John was a Hall of Fame person who built genuine and sincere relationships with front office staff, coaches and players. John’s commitment and contributions to the 49ers created the standard and tradition we strive to carry on today. Our thoughts and prayers are with the McVay family.”

The McVay family moved to Atlanta in the late 80s, where Sean McVay graduated from Marist in 2004. He led the Los Angeles Rams to a Super Bowl victory in 2021.
