John Millay, former superintendent of Martin County Schools, joins Boys & Girls Clubs

MARTIN COUNTY — The former superintendent of Martin County School District, John Millay, is joining the Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County four months after resigning from the position.

What happened: Millay will become senior vice president of the organization, where he will oversee departments such as finance, compliance, benefits administration and safety and security for each of the five clubs, according to a news release. Additionally, he is managing academic initiatives and school-based partnerships while helping oversee construction of the Stuart club's new facility.

Why it’s important: Millay was the district’s first appointed superintendent and came into the position in November 2020, but stayed less than 2½ years. He gave notice of his resignation to the School Board in February, saying it was “just a good time in my career (to leave)” after 30 years in education and 17 years as a superintendent. He will work through June 30.

Deputy Superintendent Michael Maine was selected in April to succeed Millay.

Notable statements:

  • Millay: “I am beyond excited to serve the students and families throughout all of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County. As president and CEO, Keith Fletcher — under the guidance of visionary leaders on the board of directors — has assembled a talented team of student-focused staff that I look forward to working with.”

  • Keith Fletcher, president and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County: “I’m thrilled to have such an accomplished organizational leader, administrator, innovator and game-changer join our team … The value he’ll deliver to our partnership with the school district and the expansion of our in-school mentorship program, AmeriCorps, will undoubtedly achieve new heights.
