Capital region residents seeking a night full of laughs were disappointed Thursday night after comedian John Mulaney had to abruptly cancel his show in Placer County because he “was stranded one plane ride away.”

John Mulaney, who rocketed to fame for his Netflix stand-up specials after writing sketches on “Saturday Night Live,” announced the cancellation an hour before he was scheduled to start his 8 p.m. show at the Venue at Thunder Valley Casino Resort near Lincoln.

“After hours of trying I am stranded one plane ride away and will not make it,” Mulaney said online just before 7 p.m. “My apologies to everyone who had tickets.”

He said the first of his two-night set would be rescheduled for Friday, April 19.

Thunder Valley officials said tickets for Thursday’s show would be valid for the new date and those who purchased seats through the casino could obtain refunds through its Rewards Center. Those who purchased seats through Ticketmaster weren’t alerted via the promoter’s app, though the new date for those who booked through the system had already appeared at showtime.

It’s not clear where Mulaney was stranded. His last show was Saturday at a casino in Thackerville, Oklahoma, and he was seen court-side at Sunday’s NBA game in Los Angeles between the Lakers and the Portland Trail Blazers.

His 8 p.m. performance planned for Friday will go on, Mulaney wrote on social media. Tickets are still available for the show on Friday for the tour called “John Mulaney: In Concert!”

Thunder Valley was the last stop on his most recent tour but the comedian has had trouble keeping dates around Sacramento before — he canceled shows in Concord and Reno, Nevada, in September 2022.

Prices for Friday’s show ranged from $74.95 to $149.95, according to Ticketmaster.

“Sorry!” Mulaney wrote in the post to fans on X, formerly known as Twitter, and Instagram.
