Who is John Walker in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier?

John Walker appears at the end of the first episode of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. At a press conference, a figure for the United States government announced that despite there being heroes on earth who are ready to defend it at all costs, they wanted their own hero to defend America. Who is John Walker in the Marvel Comics?

John Walker in the Marvel Comics is a bit different. He first appeared in Captain America Vol 1 #323 as Super-Patriot, a super villain to Captain America. After being dishonorably discharged from the military, he ends up getting superpowers from the Power Broker, and tries to take down Captain America due to his ideals of what it truly means to be a patriot.

Later on, when Steve Rodgers walks away from being Captain America, he ends up taking up the mantle in Captain America Vol 1 #333. Originally, Nick Fury and Sam were originally considered to take Steve's place, but Nick didn't want to give up being the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and they didn't believe that the world was ready for a Black Captain America.

However, after a battle with the Red Skull in Captain America Vol 1 #350–351 with Steve Rodgers, the government asks Steve if he wants to return as Captain America. Although he initially declines, John persuades him to accept and Steve once again returns. Since Steve is back, John Walker turns himself into U.S. Agent, which is how he's been known ever since.

While it might be expected that he gives back the shield, things might go a little bit differently in the series.

"That character from the books, what he represents is extremely relevant," creator Malcolm Spellman told Entertainment Weekly. "We shifted away from the books a little bit, so we added some very, very different dimensions, especially once Wyatt got involved and started really inhabiting the character. But the spirit, all you've got to do is read Marvel comics and then imagine that we didn't do half of what's in the books.
