Johnny Manziel's Wife Bre Denies Cheating in Half Marathon Despite World-Record Pace

Former NFL player Johnny Manziel’s wife Bre Tiesi-Manziel is denying accusations that she cheated during a half marathon earlier this month, despite multiple reports suggesting the contrary.

On Feb. 16, Tiesi-Manziel, who is a fitness and Instagram model, participated in the Run Like a Diva half marathon in Temecula, California.

Although Deadspin reported that she claimed this was the first-ever half marathon she’d participated in, and that she had not received specific training to prepare for the 13.1 miles, Tiesi-Manziel managed to finish the race in under two hours.

While her result isn’t that unusual — according to the Houston Chronicle, the median time for women running half-marathons is just over two hours — how she got there was.

On paper, Tiesi-Manziel would have had to finish each mile in around 9:06 minutes, but according to her mile-by-mile splits — which are currently posted on the event’s official website — she reached the 6.4-mile split at 1:31:29, meaning that for the first half of the race she was running each mile at a 14:20 pace, Deadspin reported.

This means that in order for Tiesi-Manziel to have finished the half marathon in 1:59:07 hours, she would have had to run the last 6.7 miles in 26:54 minutes — and at a pace of four minutes per mile, that would have been faster than the current world record.

According to Deadspin, the world-record pace for woman running a 10k race (6.21 miles) is 4:42.6 per mile, while men’s world record holder Kenenisa Bekele clocked in at 4:13.8 minutes.

Additionally, USA Today reported that Tiesi-Manziel’s score would also best the current women’s world record for just one mile, which was set at 4:12.56 by Svetlana Masterkova in 1996.

Further complicating things is the fact that there’s no data for when Tiesi-Manziel passed the 11-mile marker. The information is simply listed on her mile-by-mile splits as “missing data.”

In a since-deleted Instagram Story, Tiesi-Manziel denied accusations that she had cheated to obtain her jaw-droppingly fast results, even posting a photo of the 11-mile marker at the race.

“How sad and pathetic that people even try and makes these types of accusations,” she wrote, according to the New York Post, before claiming there weren’t staff members “waiting at each station to check u in for each marker.”

“So this ‘unaccounted’ time is a joke, we were there to help host and build awareness!! 2 this charity people what’s wrong with u!” she added.

Tiesi-Manziel went on to clarify earlier remarks she had made online about her lack of specific training for the event.

“I am a full time athlete I train all year every year,” she wrote in the since-deleted Instagram Story, according to Deadspin.

“Cardio is not really my thing so that’s what I mean by ‘I didn’t train.’ I went thinking I’ll have the heart to run or I won’t but I’ll finish,” she added, according to the New York Post, before adding that her critics “should be ashamed for ur accusations.”

A rep for Manziel did not immediately return PEOPLE’s phone call.

According to Deadspin, Tiesi-Manziel’s results could be explained by a change to the course, which was reportedly modified due to weather.

The new route would have required runners to make a loop back around the course before reaching the finish line. Had Tiesi-Manziel not done this, she would have only had to complete two additional miles following the 6.4-mile split. As she ran the first half of the marathon on a 14-minute mile pace, it would make sense that she finished in 26:54 minutes.

On Wednesday it was announced that Manziel, a former NFL player, was released by the Montreal Alouettes and banned from the CFL for violating his contract.
