Johnny Vegas has revealed how pop icon Madonna inadvertently helped him quit smoking.

Taking to Twitter, the Benidorm actor admitted that he used to smoke around 60 cigarettes a day before he discovered that forcing himself to boogie instead of light up successfully curbed the habit.

"Every time I seriously consider having a cigarette I make myself dance for at least 10 seconds to her Lucky Star hit,” he wrote."It's not a good look for me and does actually help bolster the social embarrassment bit of my brain while it fights its corner against addiction."

Vegas - whose real name is Michael Joseph Pennington - finished up the confession by thanking Madonna directly and tagging her official account.

Back in September 2018, Vegas opened up about how his father’s death the year prior contributed to his dramatic three stone weight loss during an appearance on This Morning.

"As a family, it hit us really hard," he told hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield. "It was like a tailspin."

"If you had a good parent and you miss them. Your responsibility then is to hopefully try and be a decent parent to your own children - and be around."

He went on to say that he really wanted to stop smoking at the time, but was finding it difficult because “the last time [he] stopped [he] piled weight on.”

Vegas continued: “So I need to get light enough to exercise… it's taken 15 months of walking past bread, and cheese and everything I love!”

Since then, he has lost a further two stone.

“I have not done a diet in anyway whatsoever,” he claimed while being interviewed on Loose Women in April of this year. “I have cut out things, it’s a lifestyle change.”
