Johnson calls 59% backing a 'decisive win'

STORY: GRAHAM BRADY: "I can announce that the parliamentary party does have confidence..."

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson survived a confidence vote on Monday, but a large rebellion in his Conservative Party leaves him with a struggle to win back support.

JOHNSON: "We're going to bash on, we have a huge agenda, and we're going to get it done."

Despite the victory, the vote was a blow to Johnson, with 41% of his lawmakers casting ballots against his leadership after months of scandals and gaffes that have raised questions over his authority to govern Britain and knocked his standing among the public.

But Johnson described the vote as a "decisive result," and said the party can now come together.

"We can focus on what we're doing to help people with the cost of living, with what we're doing, to clear COVID backlogs, what we're doing to make streets and communities safer by putting more police out. And it gives us the opportunity to continue to unite, to level up, to strengthen our economy."

Johnson has tried to move attention away from the "partygate scandal" for weeks.... after it came to light that he and staff held alcohol-fueled parties in his Downing Street office and residence while the rest of Britain was under strict COVID-19 lockdowns.

Johnson won the vote 211 to 148, a worse showing than when lawmakers tried to oust his predecessor Theresa May, who won her vote but then resigned six months later.

By winning Monday’s confidence vote, Johnson has secured a 12-month reprieve when lawmakers cannot bring another challenge.
