Is Johnson County company behind Project Cobra, a $1B development in South Carolina?

An Overland Park company appears to be behind a secretive $1 billion data center planned in northeast South Carolina.

QTS Data Centers, headquartered in Overland Park, bought more than $10 million worth of property in York County, South Carolina, land records show. That comes as the county is courting a $1 billion economic development deal, known as Project Cobra, revealed as an out-of-state data center through a tax break request last month.

While QTS has yet to announce any affiliation, two LLCs with addresses at the company’s Overland Park headquarters purchased hundreds of acres in the county. Part of the land was sold by York County for more than $4.3 million, records show. The county previously listed an offer to sell the land as part of Project Cobra, according to The Herald, based in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

The Overland Park company says it has more than 9 million square feet of “mega scale” data center space in North America and Europe. The company touts its work to “deliver secure, compliant infrastructure solutions, robust connectivity and premium customer service to leading hyperscale technologies companies, enterprises, and government entities.”

At its headquarters in Overland Park, at 12851 Foster St., QTS has corporate offices and a data center. The Star could not immediately reach company leaders for comment on Wednesday.
