Johnson County pizzeria closed for staffing shortage 6 months ago. Now it’s open again

After two years of operations, south Overland Park’s Papa Keno’s Pizzeria temporarily closed in November, citing staffing issues.

The corporate office in Lawrence stepped in to help the franchisee at 14850 Metcalf Ave. But the company said he decided to sell it back to them.

It remained closed.

Jairo Omido joined the restaurant in March as general manager, and he started hiring workers in April. He softly reopened the location on May 8.

Papa Keno’s was founded in 1991. It serves pizza by the slice, along with specialty pizzas such as the Denver (Canadian bacon, green peppers, yellow onion, Roma tomato and extra cheese), BBQ (with chicken, red onion, mushroom, provolone and barbecue sauce) and the Barnyard (cream cheese, tomato, mushroom, green onions and almonds).

It also has sandwiches such as the Atomic chicken (chicken, provolone, Romano, pepperoncini, jalapeno and dressing), salads, breadsticks, meatballs, cookies and brownies.

Customers can also select a keto crust (from Fattyhead), as well as a gluten-free cauliflower crust, gluten-free bread and vegan cheese. It also offers delivery and catering services.

“We are going to get this location operating at its peak level and then we are looking to expand — Overland Park, Lenexa and Olathe,” said David Hawley, president of Papa Keno’s.
