This Johnson County Popeyes could be torn down so it can become … another Popeyes

Since January, Mission’s Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen on Johnson Drive has been closed and empty after an extensive fire.

But the restaurant’s owners hope to serve customers there again, according to documents filed with the city of Mission, but only after they bulldoze the old site.

The city planning commission approved a plan to build a new Popeyes atop the old site at 6821 Johnson Drive. The proposal says the owners are required to completely tear down and rebuild after the costly fire.

The new Popeyes comes with a few updates: a pedestrian plaza with benches, planters and a low brick wall in front of the parking lot.

Now that the city planning commission has approved the plan, it will be reviewed by the City Council on Sept. 13.

Brian Scott, deputy city administrator, said the owners could get a building permit as soon as the beginning of next year. Construction would take another nine months or so, putting its opening date about a year from now.

The restaurant’s ownership group, CSM, could not be immediately reached for comment Thursday.

Popeyes has several locations in the Kansas City area, including 13546 S. Black Bob Road in Olathe and 10125 State Line Road.
