Johnson and Macron lead commemorations to mark Armistice Day

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday (November 11) attended an event to commemorate 101 years since Armistice Day, marking the end of World War One.

Commemorative events were held at war memorial across the country to mark the day the armistice was signed between the Allies and Germany in 1918.

Under grey skies and gently falling rain, Macron laid a wreath under the Arc de Triomphe at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and rekindled the eternal flame at a ceremony attended by former French presidents Francois Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy.

World War One, fought out in large part on French soil between 1914 and 1918, left about 10 million dead on all sides and remains firmly anchored in French memories.
