Boris Johnson will publish his long awaited plans to reform social care by the end of this year, the Government said last night.

The Prime Minister declared on the steps of No 10 that he would find a solution to the crisis in social care when he replaced Theresa May as Prime Minister in July 2019.

No plan has been forthcoming in the 18 months since. A year ago the Health Secretary offered cross party talks on social care with Jeremy Corbyn but since then Matt Hancock and the Department of Health have been tackling the pandemic.

A health department spokesman said: “We will bring forward proposals for social care reform later this year. In the meantime the Government is investing £1.4 billion in adult social care on top of £4.6 billion for local authorities to address additional pressures on public services, including adult social care.”

Labour said last night: “This was never a serious offer of cross party talks, and it was never extended to Sir Keir Starmer – the Conservatives have had eleven years to fix social care and have utterly failed to do so.”
