U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson, R-S.D., toured Stony Point Thursday after the Excellence in Municipal Government Award Luncheon in Watertown. The first phase of the development is nearing completion, and residents have already begun moving into the condos.

The 20-acre Stony Point development is being built in phases. The first phase includes the 46-unit condos, commercial space and the 100-boat marina. The groundwork is beginning on the second phase, which will include a 100-room hotel, additional condos, a waterpark, a bowling alley and a Chanhassen-style dinner theater.

The first phase condominiums offer expansive views of Lake Kampeska. Residents have access to underground parking, a golf and video game simulator, a weight room, a yoga loft with 1000s of virtual programs, a spa and salon, a pool and more.

“A lot of people have dreams of a project like this, but not a lot of people see it come to fruition,” said Johnson as he toured the building.

Making that dream come true has been a long endeavor for property owner Bob Drake who first purchased a portion of the current plot in 2013. Groundwork did not begin on the marina until 2018.

“When I first started this, I was 56. I’m now 65. It took that long,” said Drake.

Phase one of Stony Point was scheduled to be operational by this summer, but delays in the receiving of construction materials like interior doors and glass have pushed the finishing date. Regardless of the challenges, Crestone Companies has been busy constructing the condos for residents waiting to move into their homes.

“We’ve got (residents) from Minneapolis, Nevada, Montana, Wyoming and Sioux Falls. A lot of them are younger people coming to Watertown to enjoy the lake on the weekends, and a lot of them are older people retiring,” said Drake.

There are only 10 condos currently available in the first phase of the Stony Point development, and condos in the second phase are already available for purchase. Drake said that the fully finished and trimmed units in phase one have sold for roughly $400,000.

“There was nothing like this in the state,” he said. “My wife and I looked at Okoboji and thought we needed something like this that we could go and live at.”
