Johnston stays perfect, La Salle edges Barrington, and the rest of Tuesday's high school basketball action across RI

GAME OF THE DAY

Johnston 55, Rogers 44

Neari Vasquez flipped a shot up into the hoop with two minutes left in the third quarter to break a tie and give Johnston the lead for good as the Panthers took down the Vikings, 57-44, on Tuesday night in Newport.

The Vasquez basket started an 18-5 run to close the game as the Panthers remained unbeaten (14-0) in Division II. Travis Burroughs led Rogers with 13 points but the Vikings – who played without high scorer Elijah Neal who was out with an ankle sprain – slid to 9-5 in the standings.

Johnston was up 44-41 after three quarters and held Rogers to three fourth-quarter points. Johnston’s Anthony Corsinetti scored 13 of his game-high 19 points in the second half and drained a trio of 3-point shots.

Derek Salvatore also sank three treys and finished with 15 points for the Panthers. Johnston made eight of 25 3-point tries and outscored the Vikings 24-6 from behind the arc. Miles Ventura and Dayvon London chipped in with eight points each for Rogers.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Division I

East Providence 58, Central 37

Trey Rezendez scored 23 points, 15 of them coming in the first half, as the Townies jumped out to a 35-18 lead at halftime and coasted to the win from there.

Rezendez totals included 3 threes, all in the first half. William Winfield added 9 points in the win and Kemerie Dublin pitched in with 8 points. Lester Rodriquez topped the Knights in scoring with 10 points.

La Salle 56, Barrington 53

With Josh Ojuri scoring 16, Kelvin Odih 15 and Dante Iafrate 10, the Rams were able to sneak past the Eagles in their Division I game. Sean Bonneau led all scorers with 22 points for the Eagles, who trailed 30-29, at halftime.

Cumberland 59, Woonsocket 50

Joe Parenteau finished with 19 points and Kalil Fofana added 13 as they led the Clippers to victory. Andre Bell netted 14 and Jeriel Vazquez and Aarick Webster each had 10 for the Villa Novans.

Division II

Middletown 69, Coventry 60

Timmy Robinson scored 19 of his game-high 30 points in the second half to help the Islanders distance themselves from the Oakers and come away with a win.

RJ Wiggins and Roberto Figueras combined to score 22 in the win. Logan Voelker did his best to keep Coventry in the game as he scored a team-high 24 points. Aidan Reardon scored 11 points in the loss.

Cranston West 54, Tolman 53

The Tigers battled back from a 7-point halftime deficit, but the Falcons made the shots they needed to hang on to a 1-point victory in Division II action.

Cranston West's Marcus Chung led all scorers with 19 points, Anthony Veltri added 11 and Nick Masse had 9 in a tough, physical game in Pawtucket. Tolman had three players in double figures - Jaiden Perry, John Hilaire and Josiah Washington - all scored 10 points in the loss.

Burrillville 69, Mt. Hope 58

Logan Gelinas was hot from the start and the Broncos took advantage of it by knocking off the Huskies.

Gelinas scored 26 points, which included 8 points from the stripe, all of them in the second half. Eli Diallo was also a force in the win as he scored 14 points and both Nolan Serafin and Charlie Bergin had 8 points each.

The Huskies' Griffen Berardo, held scoreless in the first half, came out on fire in the second frame and scored 18 points on 6 treys and teammates Ben Calouri and Lucas Andriozzi scored 15 and 13 points, respectively.

St. Raphael 62, Pilgrim 45

Nyo White scored 17 points, Ian Bing chipped in with 11 and Moses Meus got on the score sheet with 10 in the Saints win over the Patriots. For Pilgrim, Carter Clifton knocked down 16 points and Isaiah Price added 10 points in the loss.

Division III

Ponaganset 69, EWG 52

Jason Sepe scored 22 points, Layton Luca found the range for 17 points and Michael Stewart was good for 10 more as Ponaganset upended the Scarlet Knights. Lucas Pennacchia and Robert Simoes had 18 apiece for EWG in the loss.

Central Falls 52, Mount St. Charles 48

The Warriors were led by Alex Maia's 22 points, but got strong contributions from Jamilson De Pina Almeida (11) and Andreni Maldonado and Julian Ortiz, who each netted 8 in their Division III matchup. The Mounties were led by Michael Hebert, who had 14, and got 8 points each from Manny Adeyeye and Jack Ellis.

North Smithfield 57, Scituate 24

Alvendz Viera Dones finished with a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds and Issiah Chauvin contributed 12 points for the Northmen. Andrew Freelove had 10 for the Spartans.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Moses Brown 54, Prout 18

Lauren Bousquet scored 18 points and eight of her teammates also finished on the scoring sheet as the Quakers romped in their Division II game.  Erin Young led the Crusaders with eight points.

Toll Gate 36, North Smithfield 26

The Titans' Amanda Preston and Dulce Garcia each sored 10 points and Toll Gate clamped down on defense to top the Northmen and hold on to the top spot in Division III. Bryson Murray led North Smithfield with 10 in the loss.
