Johnston 'Super Dad' honored for his hard work with a special Father's Day gift
A casual barbershop conversation led to a local "Super Dad" getting a special Father's Day gift Thursday in Ankeny.
Thor Hanson, of Johnston, got a free haircut, beard trim and facial at Scissors and Scotch in Ankeny, 1610 S.W. Main St., in honor of his work building sets and props for Johnston High School's production of "Cinderella" by Rodgers and Hammerstein, with which one of his three daughters was involved. Hanson, an Army veteran, took a lead role on building the sets for the musical, including a grand clock and the iconic princess carriage.
Hanson said the topic of his hair and beard getting a little wild came up with his stylist, Jeanie Stark, so he showed her pictures of his excuse: all the sets he had been working on for weeks. The word got around to general manager Jessica Riehm, who was looking for a dad to recognize.
Hanson easily took first place, Riehm said.

"He did the coolest thing for his daughter, so we're giving him a boost for Father's Day," she said.
Johnston High School's "Cinderella" production received statewide honors and will be featured in a showcase Saturday at the Des Moines Civic Center.
