Johnstown Brassworks to play noon recital

The Johnstown Brassworks will play classics, jazz and pops in a recital at noon Tuesday at First Lutheran Church, 415 Vine St., Johnstown.

The program, supported in part by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, is free, but donations will be accepted during a light lunch that follows.

The brass quintet comprises educators who enjoy playing music. They have performed together since 2014 at recitals, weddings and church services throughout the region.

Sometimes they invite their students to play with them, as when they present an annual concert at the Grand Halle in Cambria City.

Eric Pfeil, trumpet, teaches music at Greater Johnstown High School. He is a 2008 music education graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Rebekah Stombaugh, trumpet, is the director of bands at Penn Cambria School District. She is a music education alumna of IUP and is working on a master’s degree in wind conducting from Messiah College. She also plays in the Johnstown Civic Concert Band and the Altoona Community Band.

Jerrod Cannistraci, French horn, is the director of bands in the Richland School District. He holds a degree in music education and a master’s in educational psychology from IUP. Before joining the Richland faculty he taught music at Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School, Altoona.

He is the assistant director of the Johnstown Civic Concert Band and an adjunct music instructor at Pennsylvania Highland Community College.

Joshua Brumbaugh, trombone, is the junior and senior high instrumental music teacher in Westmont Hilltop School District. He has a bachelor’s degree in music education from IUP. He performs in many area ensembles, including the big band Jazz in Your Face, the Johnstown Civic Band and the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra.

Jason June, tuba, is on the music faculty at Penn Highlands Community College. He formerly was the Somerset Area High School band director. He is a music and technology specialist for W.W. Norton & Co., a New York textbook publisher.

June holds a bachelor’s degree in music education and a master’s in music technology from Duquesne University.
