The beauty of an ambiguous ending is that it always leaves a sequel on the table. Which is something that Joker director Todd Phillips, and its star, Joaquin Phoenix, are already thinking about. Although the record-breaking comic book movie doesn't need a sequel, the pair have once again admitted that they're open to the idea of returning to Arthur Fleck.

In a recent interview with LA Times, director Todd Phillips conceded that a sequel to Joker "would be interesting" as long as it's built upon the same premise as the first film.

"It couldn't just be this wild and crazy movie about the 'Clown Prince of Crime'," he explained. "It would have to have some thematic resonance in a similar way that [Joker] does."

Reflecting on the film's runaway success, Phillips added: "I think that's ultimately why the movie connected, it's what's going on underneath. So many movies are about the spark, and this is about the powder."

Is Phoenix tempted to reprise his role, though? Well, never say never.

Sharing his tentative hopes for another film, Phoenix revealed that he'd already asked Todd Phillips if he could "start working on a sequel", adding: "[I said,] 'There's way too much to explore'. It was kind of in jest – but not really." Let's hope he's not...joking.

Joker is in cinemas now.
