Joliet teenager charged in August slaying of girl, 17, on Northwest Side, cops say

A Joliet teenager was charged with first-degree murder in an August 19 shooting of a 17-year-old girl in the North Austin neighborhood, Chicago police said.

The teenager was charged as a juvenile so his name was not provided. But he was arrested Wednesday in the 1100 block of Mills Road in Joliet after he was identified as the person who fatally shot a girl Aug. 19, 2023, shortly after 4 p.m. in the 5700 block of North Bloomingdale Avenue, police said.

The fatal shooting took place at Galewood Park where another teen also was wounded. The teenage girl was identified as Ashuntice Wilburn of west suburban Westmont, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The teenager was scheduled to appear Thursday at a detention hearing.
