“Mad Men” actor Jon Hamm is the latest star to join Taylor Sheridan’s new show about the West Texas oil boom.

Paramount+ announced Thursday that Hamm will appear in “Landman” in a recurring guest starring role. Hamm joins a previously announced cast that includes Billy Bob Thornton, Demi Moore and Ali Larter.

Hamm will play Monty Miller, a titan of the Texas oil industry who has a long personal and professional relationship with Tommy Norris (Thornton).

“Landman” is co-created and executive produced by Sheridan and Christian Wallace, which is based on Texas Monthly’s podcast “Boomtown” that Wallace wrote and hosted. The series will debut on Paramount+.

The show’s synopsis reads, “Landman is set in the proverbial boomtowns of West Texas and is a modern day tale of fortune seeking in the world of oil rigs. The series is an upstairs/downstairs story of roughnecks and wildcat billionaires fueling a boom so big, it’s reshaping our climate, our economy and our geopolitics.”

“Landman” is the latest series for Hamm, who previously starred in the fifth season of “Fargo” and third season of “The Morning Show”.

Hamm has appeared in films, such as “The Town” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” but is likely known to many as the suit wearing, cigarette smoking advertising executive Don Draper from “Mad Men.” Hamm picked up both Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe awards for his portrayal on the show that ran from 2007-2015.

“Landman” began production in early February and is expected to film in and around North Texas for the next few months.

In fact, the show filmed scenes on TCU’s campus Thursday. Weeks before the shoot, local agency Legacy Casting put out a call for TCU students and alumni to appear as background actors in a track and field scene.

This isn’t the first time North Texans were asked to appear as extras in the show.

In late November, Legacy first announced that casting was underway for Sheridan’s new show and that real-life oilfield workers or “roughnecks” should apply to be background actors. A few weeks into January, another casting call for roughnecks went out.

“Landman” is the latest project from Sheridan, who remains one of the busiest guys in Hollywood. The North Texas native’s latest show “Lawmen: Bass Reeves” premiered in November 2023, which filmed scenes in and around North Texas.
