Jones Day has hired away Ashurst projects partner Adam Conway in Perth.

Conway, who will lead Jones Day's energy and resources transactional practice in Perth, focuses on major project development and mergers and acquisitions in the mining and oil and gas sectors.

In 2015, Conway represented Perth-based mining company Sirius Resources N.L. on its sale to larger rival Independence Group N.L. for $1.4 billion. Also in 2015, he advised Northern Star Resources Ltd., another Perth-based mining company, on a $20 million acquisition of gold mines in Western Australia from Canadian miner Barrick Gold Corp.

Conway rejoined legacy Blake Dawson in 2008 and stayed with the firm after its merger with Ashurst in 2011. He had an earlier stint at Blake Dawson's Singapore office and practiced with legacy Mallesons Stephen Jaques.

"Given the outlook for increased project and transactional activity in the energy and resources sectors, it is an opportune time to build our energy and resources transactional capabilities," Simon Bellas, partner-in-charge of Jones Day's Perth office, said in a statement.

At Jones Day, Conway joins former Ashurst disputes partner Lucas Wilk who made the move in April 2017. The global firm has been expanding in Australia in recent years, opening offices in Melbourne in January this year, Brisbane in 2016 and Perth in 2014. Jones Day now has more than 85 lawyers in Australia.
