Jones-led Sun clip Aces
Connecticut's Jonquel Jones scored 10 fourth-quarter points to lead the visiting Sun to an 80-74 win over the host Las Vegas Aces on Sunday.
Courtney Williams recorded 19 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals for the Sun (3-1).
The lead changed hands seven times in the fourth quarter until Alyssa Thomas' layup put the Sun up 73-72 with 4:06 left. A pair of free throws by Jones extended the lead to 75-72 with 2:55 left.
Jasmine Thomas connected on a 23-foot jumper from the corner, and a layup by Jones gave Connecticut an eight-point lead with 1:07 left.
The Aces offense stalled late in the game and managed just two points in the final 4:21.
After hauling down 22 rebounds in Friday's loss at Los Angeles, Jones finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds for Connecticut.
Shekinna Stricklen went 4-for-9 from beyond the arc and finished with 15 points as the Sun handed the Aces (1-2) their second straight loss.
Liz Cambage, making her home debut for Las Vegas, scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds in 14 minutes off the bench.
For the 36th time in her career, A'ja Wilson reached double figures with 19 points. Wilson also pulled down nine rebounds and had three assists.
The Aces bench outscored the Sun reserves, 40-10, but turnovers -- Las Vegas committed 21 -- doomed the home team.
The Aces took a 44-41 lead into intermission after a first half marked by each team going on 14-2 runs.
Trailing 14-9 in the first, the Aces went on their 14-2 streak to take a 23-16 lead. Cambage and Sugar Rodgers came off the bench to combine for six points during the run.
Stricklen and Williams kept the Sun in the game. Williams scored 11 first-half points while Stricklen made 3 of 5 from long range and scored 10 to help the Sun go on their 14-2 run to take a 38-36 lead.
Connecticut came out in the third quarter and opened up a five-point lead. The Aces' offense, with both Wilson and Cambage on the floor, couldn't get untracked. After Wilson went to bench at the two-minute mark, Cambage scored five straight to the game at 57.
