After dismantling Union City to start league play, the Jonesville varsity baseball team hosted Blissfield for a Saturday morning doubleheader. Blissfield is known to be a perennial baseball powerhouse in the LCAA, but the Royals have struggled so far in their packed early season schedule. The Comets were able to get a quality 6-5 win over Blissfield in game one but fell short in the final game 3-13.

Game one saw the Comets start play with a 1-0 lead after three innings. By the bottom of the fifth inning, the Royals had taken the lead with a four-run inning in the fifth. Jonesville needed a rally in the bottom of the sixth to get back into the game. The Comets were able to get five runs, taking a 6-5 lead heading into the top of the seventh. Drew Bradley started the game for the Comets. The pitcher allowed one strikeout and one hit over two innings. Wade Sommers stepped in and pitched two innings, striking out three and giving up two earned runs and five total runs.

Micah Calligan pitched the final two innings, striking out one batter in the top of the seventh to help get the win for the Comets.

AJ Bowers had one run. Connor VanBuskirk had one hit and one run. Drew Bradley had one hit. Tyler Scholfield had two hits, one RBI and one run. Ethan Hammer had one hit and one run. Devan Herendeen had one triple-base hit, two RBI and one run. Bradley Wright had two hits including a double. He also had one RBI and a run.

The Blissfield Royals got revenge on the Comets in game two, taking a 13-3 victory back home. The Comets gave up two runs in each of the last four innings. The Comets got one run in the first inning and two in the fourth.

Bowers had a base hit. Bradley had a base hit and a run. Scholfield continued his impressive batting effort with another base hit, RBI and a run. Jaxson Phifer had one run. Damon Newell had one hit and an RBI. Herendeen had a hit and an RBI.

Herendeen started on the mound for the Comets. Herendeen had one strikeout, surrendering two earned runs and five total runs. Scholfield pitched two innings, striking out one batter and giving up four earned runs. Bradley Wright pitched in relief, striking out two and giving up two runs. Ethan Hammer pitched in relief, giving up two earned runs and striking out one. The Royals had three double-base hits that helped drive in runs.

Despite the loss to end week one, the Comets seem like a contender for one of the most improved teams in the Big 8 this season. Experience at the mound and on defense has proven to be solid core foundations for the 2022-23 Comet team. It remains to be seen if the team can keep up the momentum once the conference season starts, but for now the Comets look like a team that's ready to compete in their final Big 8 season of baseball. The next game for the Comets will be a home game against the Bronson Vikings on Tuesday, April 18.
