The Board of Education approved a contract Aug. 22 with Secure Education Consultants to perform a safety, security and emergency preparedness site assessment.

Superintendent Erik Weatherwax stated in an email to The Hillsdale Daily News on Wednesday the state of Michigan set aside money for safety and security improvements and that each school district will get a certain amount of money.

“This company (Secure Education Consultants) has been approved by the state and they work with schools around the nation including Oxford,” Weatherwax stated. “The safety and security of our students and staff is of the utmost importance. We are an educational organization but we first have to look out for the wellbeing and safety of everyone.”

Weatherwax added that now that the contract is approved, school administrators will work with the company to schedule the assessment and that when it is completed, he will review the results with the administrative team and the board of education.

Secure Education Consultants was founded by former secret service agents, military veterans and law enforcement officers.

The company will make recommendations on ways to improve safety and security of Jonesville’s facilities.
