Jonesville softball sweeps Quincy; baseball splits with the Orioles

JONESVILLE — The Jonesville softball and baseball teams took on the Quincy Orioles in doubleheaders on Tuesday, May 17.

Head coach Marlena Nichols and the Comets varsity softball swept the Orioles in two tightly contested matchups. The Comets won the first game 7-6, thanks to a walk-off RBI single from Addie Mclouth on the first pitch at bat. Quincy took the lead in the sixth inning with a four-run swing, but Jonesville would take the victory in the final half inning of the game.

Maddelyn Lee got the win for Jonesville, pitching seven innings and striking out 16 batters. Addie Mclouth and Brooke Owen stole two bases each during the game. Mackenzie Baker, Maddelyn Lee and Lyra Nichols each stole one base. Three Comets had two hits: Addie Mclouth, Brooke Owen, and Abby Gutowski. Gutowski drove in two runs and also scored once. Maddelyn Lee had an RBI base hit. Kierstyn Keller had an RBI base hit. Bre Thacker had an RBI.

Game two saw the Comets win 11-9. The Comets started the game with an 11-0 advantage after three-and-a-half innings. The Orioles bounced back with six runs in the fourth inning to keep the game alive. The Bullpen for the Orioles helped hold Jonesville to zero runs through the rest of the game. A three-run inning in the bottom of the ninth brought the Orioles back within two runs. All three runs were scored with two outs. Sophomore starting Pitcher Lyra Nichols finished the game after catching a pop-out.

Nichols pitched all seven innings, striking out four batters and earning the win. Mackenzie Baker led the team with two stolen bases. Gracen Hager, Kierstyn Keller, Maddelyn Lee, Lyra Nichols and Alexis Trine all had one.

Maddelyn Lee led the Comets with three hits including two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. Lyra Nichols had three hits including a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Brooke Owen had a double-base hit that drove in one run. Gracen Hager had a RBI base hit. Abby Gutowski had a RBI double-base hit that drove in two runs. Mackenzie Baker had two hits including an RBI. Kierstyn Keller had a sacrifice hit and scored once. Alexis Trine had one hit. Addie Mclouth had one RBI.

The Comets are currently 12-8 overall and have a doubleheader against Clinton this Thursday at home.

The baseball team lost the first game of their doubleheader 9-5. The Comets opened the game with a 3-2 lead, but the Comets would give up seven more runs to the Orioles. Wade Sommers started the game on the mound, giving up seven earned runs over four innings while striking out four batters. Tyler Scholfield finished the game, pitching three innings and striking out one batter.

Drew Bradley and Bradley Wright each had two stolen bases. Ashton Thacker led the Comets with two hits, one RBI and one run scored. Wade Sommers had an RBI base hit and scored a run. Tyler Scholfield had one RBI. Drew Bradley had one hit and scored two runs. AJ Bowers and Jaxson Phifer each had one hit. Bradley Wright had an RBI.

Game two was a close back-and-forth match that saw the Comets jump out to a 3-1 lead heading into the sixth. The Orioles came back with one run in the bottom of the sixth, but their comeback attempt would fall short. The 4-2 victory for the Comets gave Ayden Males the victory for starting on the mound for the Comets. The lefty allowed only two hits and two runs while striking out four batters. Drew Bradley would close the game for the Comets from the bullpen.

AJ Bowers led the team with two stolen bases. Ayden Males, Tyler Scholfield, Wade Sommers and Connor Vanbuskirk all head one stolen base. Jaxson Phifer and Ashton Thacker each recorded one hit. Wade Sommers had two hits including a double and two RBIs. Tyler Scholfield had one hit an dscored one run. Drew Bradley had a hit. Connor Vanbuskirk had two hits and two runs. AJ Bowers scored a run.

Comet baseball will join softball in hosting the Clinton Redwolves on Thursday, May 19. Doubleheaders start at 4 p.m.
